EyeCaught: Asian Men in the Blogosphere

The blogosphere (aka Web 2.0) has provided us with a venue to explore and appreciate people, cultures, and places in an entertaining and interactive manner. As bloggers we write about what’s important to us – whether it be the arts, entertainment, or the everyday occurrences of our lives. At times, we even write about what we see on other blogs. That said, I’d like to point you in the direction of a few men from the web that have recently caught my eye. This week’s EyeCaught theme, “Asian Men in the Blogosphere,” suits the MasculineCurves’ motto of embracing men of all cultures.

As Caught on Tiggah’s Life in Random
Okay, I just have to say that this is one very sexy blogger and one hot blog. Tiggah’s Life in Random follows the daily musings of 24-year old San Diego blogger, Tiggah, and his partner Pooh (who happens to be easy on the eyes too). The only warning here is that you may want to use discretion if viewing from a work PC as Tiggah tends to be a bit of an exhibitionist –but we certainly have no complaints about that.

As Caught on Norm Yip’s blog
Here’s a shot from photographer Norm Yip’s latest book, 2 a.m. Yip, a Chinese-Canadian now residing in Hong Kong, made the following statement on his blog about how his self-esteem changed when he moved to China: "Being raised in white bread Canada (Saskatchewan to be exact), I was under the impression that only white guys could be beautiful. Well, I was wrong. Hong Kong changed all that for me. In Canada, I felt undesireable and an outcast within a social subgroup (I'm gay). So Hong Kong was a shocking and pleasant surprise."

Kraus Estanislao

Like I always say, the internet is a virtual gallery for artists to get their work out there and harness niche audiences. Without the web, there are probably thousands of remarkable creatives who might not gain exposure otherwise. Kraus Estanislao is one of those rare internet discoveries whose work has provided me with a great source of inspiration for my own photographic aspirations.

According to his Fotki profile, Estanislao lives in the Philippines and his interest in photography originally began as a hobby that has evolved to a more professional level.

“I find the human body the perfect subject matter, creating an unlimited variety of poses, each one unique to its own. What makes my work special is that each one of my subjects are either friends or work colleagues who have given their time to increase my portfolio and to push myself to higher levels of quality,” he states in his profile.

Estanislao’s work is executed with an uncompromising level of integrity. His portraiture and figurative art is not only intimate, but also depicts a great amount of respect for those who step in front of his camera. Be sure to check out his online Fotki portfolio, you won’t be disappointed.

Note: Other than his YouTube page and Fotki portfolio, I have been unable to find any additional information on Estanislao. I’ve attempted to email the photographer, but it’s bounced back “undeliverable.” If anyone is aware of any publications in which Estanislao’s work has been featured, please contact me.

Cut Sleeve Boys set for U.S. Theatrical Release

If you like a bit of camp, gender bending, and men with British accents then you’ll want to be sure to catch Cut Sleeve Boys. The independent production and distribution company, here! Films has acquired North American distribution rights to the film which will show in five U.S. cities in August (view screening schedule here) and is scheduled for DVD launch later this fall.

Synopsis
Two gay British Chinese men are getting older and looking for love. Mel is an egotistical scene queen who deals with his insecurities by sleeping around, and Ash believes he’ll meet the masculine man of his dreams when he decides to begin cross dressing.

Breaking down stereotypes
Not only does this comedy confront the media-driven obsession with youth and beauty, so often glorified in the gay community, but it also breaks down the marginalization of Asian men in film.

“The main characters in Cut Sleeve Boys do not suffer the ‘fresh off the boat’ mentality of finding it hard to assimilate into mainstream society. These characters have done it so well they have become the city itself – confident, successful and sophisticated, with the power to choose. They are a new generation of British Chinese who dare to and can have it all!” says director Ray Yeung.
