It baffles me as to why a guy brave enough to cover Madonna and post it on YouTube would “hetero-nize” the lyrics and attempt to come off as straight. But this is too damn hot, nonetheless (and he takes off his shirt!).

Clearly I’m not a vocalist, but I imagine Take a Bow can’t be easy to sing given the demanding range the song requires (and Madonna was only able to do it with Babyface backing her up). But Mikey Busto’s cover is probably one of the best vocal covers I’ve heard on YouTube in a long time. His falsetto is amazing. Busto, a former Canadian Idol finalist, is also quite the YouTube commedian. His Filipino Skin Tutorial bit is ROTFLMAO.

You can look and you will find Javier

If you caught the premier of  The Voice tonight on NBC then you probably discovered Javier Colon. I've always thought Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time (and True Colors for that matter) has been covered way too much by too many artists, but I could listen to Javier time and again.

I know this cover of Rihanna's Only Girl in the World has been floating around the interwebz for a minute now, but it's so damn hot that I thought it was worthy of a post. I mean, these kids are talented despite all the auto-tune and reverb going on here.

I have to believe he is magic

The brilliant branding team over at Macy's has licensed Olivia Newton John's Magic from the train wreck of a film Xanadu (1980) and now I can't get it out of my head. So like a senseless gay I've been skipping around chirping "You have to believe we are magic. Nothing can stand in our way," for the past week. So here's a quirky thing about me. I am obsessed with YouTubing covers of songs, and I couldn't have been any more thrilled at the discovery this version featuring Terri Nunn (of Take My Breath Away Berlin fame) and Dave Navarro. Here's another thing about me. I am wildly infatuated by little men with smokey mascara and tattoos.

Okay, so maybe not cooler than Kool and the Gang, but give two white dudes a guitar and a microphone and it's pretty damn "Fresh!"

Okay, so I know I've already given this Joseph Vincent kid some "covah boy" play here once before. But I likes what I like. This dude's tearing up these R&B covers. Like OMG!

I'm not entirely convinced Christina's single works as a ballad, but Omar Afuni brings it home with really hot vocals on this Not Myself Tonight cover. Check out his website here. Who needs American Idol when you've got YouTube?

As you know, I have a slight obsession with searching YouTube for acoustic covers. What I like about this video is they sound great, and actually look like they're having a lot of fun. And just like the original, you just can't resist snapping your fingers and singing along.

This Rihanna cover is so damn hot! The combination of those lyrics (switched up for a male perspective), that face, and that charm... all I can say is dayum! His name is Joseph Vincent and you can check him out on MySpace. 

if I could make a deal with god...

As a child of the '80s I can't help to be obsessed by Placebo's cover of the classic Kate Bush tune Running Up That Hill, which, by the way, is featured on the soundtrack of the new film Daybreakers. Does anyone know whatever happened to Kate Bush? Where is she now?

I want my YouTube! And Gimme More!

Okay, so I'm not ashamed to admit this guilty little pleasure. I can absolutely lose myself in YouTube. I remember when we used to tune in to MTV to see the hottest artists of the day premier their big-budget theatrical music productions. But now is a different time and there's no doubt that the preferred video venue is YouTube. (I'm too cheap to pay for cable, so can anyone tell me if MTV is even still on the air?) The thing that's so addicting about YouTube is that you go there to look one video, and not only do you get what you went there for, but it also brings up twenty other related videos. Next thing you know, three hours have passed and you're still glued to your PC screen.

They used to say that imitation is the best form of flattery. But in this era of user generated media that's no longer true. Nowadays, "re-invention" is the most preferred form of flattery. And you're not bona-fide artist unless someone has taken whatever you've done, reinvented it, and posted it to the web for all the world to see.

Last fall, I featured a little clip of a very talented (and sexy might I add) Nick Connell covering Britney Spears' "Gimme More." Well, here's another Nic with an ever-so-reinvented take on the pop anthem. Nic Billington (check out his YouTube page here) claims he recorded these vocals with a simple PC mic, and filmed the video with a home camera. If that's the case, I'm absolutely astounded. The quality here is just as good as anything I saw on MTV back in the day! Internet really has killed the video star.

Video of the Day: It’s Nick, B!tch!

Here’s an up and coming web-lebrity that I think readers of this blog are going to like (wink). Nick Connell is a student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and is blazing up YouTube with this melodic cover of Britney Spears’ Gimme More. According to his YouTube page, he claims to be a pop music fanatic and promises to post his very own version of the latest chart toppers each week. In fact, this cutie even invites his fans to email him their requests. Now, I’m sure we can come up with a few requests for Nick. Anyone?
