I don't consider myself a fashionisto, but here are a few items from D.C. designer Andrew Nowell's collection I find sleek, sophisticated, and sexxxyyyy.... And if I could get my waist back to 28 inches then here's what I'd be wearing this Fall! On his ModelMayhem page he cites the art of Tom of Finland as one of his influences, which is certainly evident given the dramatic waistlines and embellished chests of depicted in his couture. It seems as though Brazilian male supermodel Marlon Teixeira has been popping up all over the gay blogosphere lately. Needless to say, I’ve developed a bit of an infatuation with this olive-skinned, pink-lipped, pleasure-trailed, eye gumdrop. Turns out he’s one of five cover boys for Coitus Magazine’s Issue #2. Lensed by Pantelis, he’s a good reason to check out the new pub. Coitus is a unique high-art/fashion magazine which only prints 1000 books per issue. Teixeira graces the cover of just 200 prints of this issue and I’ve already placed my order! (Well worth the $24 after Euro conversion!) See more here.
It's hard to believe that today would have been Gia Carangi's 51st birthday, which for many is still too young to die. Gia's star shot to fame in the late 70s early 80s as one of the world's first supermodels. Succumbing to heroin addiction, Gia died in 1986 of AIDS related complications and is believed to be one of the first documented cases of a female celebrity with the disease. Her short and hard life is portrayed by Angelina Jolie in the HBO film Gia (1998).

Oh, to be a rich old white man! It’s been rumored that Calvin Klein’s new boy toy (via here and here) is none other than porn star Zeke of the Sean Cody lineup. I have to admit the resemblance is undeniable (as in don’t try to deny it). Though it does look as though papa Calvin has bought him a new set of teeth and perhaps a rhinoplasty too. I bet he thinks “Eternity” is the length of time between faking an orgasm and when daddy hands over the Amex Black. Clearly he’s buy-sexual. And you can file that under “yep, I said it!”
Last
week I posted a commentary on the summer issue of Pulse magazine. While I praised the magazine for its gorgeous
cover image, I also warned readers to take the featured shot at face
value. The cover models were chosen
“because of their high cheek bones and chiseled chins. Their faces are heavy
with eye shadow and mascara, and smoothed by the wonders of Photoshop’s “dust
& scratches” feature.”
Interestingly
enough, noted fashion photographer Tarrice Love was one of the contributors to
the issue; and while he didn’t shoot the cover image, he is responsible for the
striking image you see here on the left (which appears on page 39). What I enjoy most about his work is the manner
in which he engages the viewer through the sultry facial expressions of his
models. Tarrice’s creative eye has even
landed him gigs directing fashion shows featuring designs by Todd Oldham,
Nicole Miller, Sean Jean, and Phat Farm—just to name a few.

is also one of the brave few in the industry to show us the before & after magic

When
I opened the September issue of Vanity Fair I nearly fell out of my chair and
smacked my precious head. Was I delirious,
or did I just see Djimon Hounsou’s package? Nope, it was his package alright. Right dab in the front of the
magazine’s 415 page annual style edition. In last month’s Critical Analysis
I described a Calvin Klein ad as “boring and uninteresting” and inferred that the
brand was losing its edge. I must recant
that statement after seeing this three-page spread (inside cover) featuring
Hounsou endorsing the new CK underwear line, Steel.
Okay, so it might not be so unpredictably provocative to see male models in tightie whities plastered all over the pages of a fashion magazine. But I remember a time when the closest thing to a black man in an underwear ad was Shemar Moore striking a pose for the occasional Undergear catalogue, and that’s just about as authentic as…uhhmm… Shemar Moore hosting SoulTrain. So it’s not a far stretch to conclude that the only thing mainstream culture finds more intimidating or overly fantasized than a black man is an African man. That’s why I was both surprised and delighted to see Hounsou in this position (so to speak). It looks like Calvin Klein might be forward thinking after all.

Whether we rush out to pick up the current issue of our favorite high-end magazine when it hits the news stand, or wait patiently for the subscription to arrive in the mail, we can't deny that these full-color glossies are like miniature art galleries featuring the most notable photographers, designers, and creative directors in the world. It is not uncommon to pick up an issue of Vogue, GQ, or Vanity Fair and see a print ad photographed by the likes of a David LaChapelle or a Mario Testino. Just as with any collection of art, these ads are worthy of a critical analysis. As a new feature at MasculineCurves.com we'll periodically be taking a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly in advertising imagery. Here's what caught our attention this month:
Best Tribute to an Icon
We're not certain this approach has proven
effective for the once thriving jeans manufacturer, but Guess certainly knows
how to pay homage to a timeless Hollywood icon. The company re-energized its brand in 1993 when it hired Anna
Nicole Smith as spokesperson and conjured up those Marylin Monroe/Jayne
Mansfield inspired print ads. In this 2007 ad the model is more
reminiscent of an innocent Norma Jean.
Best Interactive Campaign
One of the few natural beauties in the entertainment
industry, Selma Hayek lends her passionate sophistication to the Campari
brand. This campaign cleverly splashes on to the web with its series of
video vignettes featuring Ms. Hayek as a mysterious sultry guest at the Hotel

Most Boring
Does anyone remember when Calvin Klein was one of
the edgiest and most controversial brands in fashion? The only words to
describe this ad are "boring and uninteresting" He appears to
be confused as to why he's at the shoot, and jeers to the make up artist who
gave her that charcoal heroine addict eye treatment. So '90s.
Most Artistic
Dolce & Gabbana is probably the most gay
forward fashion advertiser in the industry. Not only do the ads tend to
feature a lot of candied men in the buff, but D&G has been so bold as to
place these ads in mainstream publications such as GQ. So once you're
done salivating over the bods on the guys, we dare you to take a closer look at
the shear artistry of this campaign at dolcegabbana.it.
Most Deceptive
Here's a classic case of pulling the wool over
your eyes. We love Halle Berry, but has she sold her soul to the devil? We don't think so. The Revlon headline reads
"Today flawless feels weightless." The only thing flawless here
is the use of Photoshop. Seriously, are we to believe Ms.Berry doesn't have pores? 
And the MasculineCurves nod for Best Overall
Print Campaign goes to Christian Dior. Featuring lavish use of color,
dramatic lighting, and intricate styling everything about this campaign tells
us that Dior is the most luxurious brand in couture.

Jay Diers is at it again! The young photographer from Iowa took a chance looking into American motel rooms and surprises us anew with unusually intimate, warm-hearted and yet in-your-face portraits. The bored farm boys of the American Midwest seem as if they've just been waiting for their chance to finally show themselves to the world! And so they pose, beguile with their young bodies and seem to be saying just one thing - "Take me!" But the photos never seem blatant or exploitative thanks to Diers' respectful and dignified handling of his models. This is a magnificent portrait of American youth! For more information click here
Seldom has a photographer created such an authentic work as Jack Slomovits has in this book. From the middle of the sexual action the artist captures us from the first photos onward. Slomovits' semi-documentary style leaves little to the imagination; high-contrast detailed photos are interspersed with portraits in a snapshot aesthetic.
