I first read about the violence and racial tensions occurring in Chicago's Boystown neighborhood this morning on Rod 2.0. Of course the violence is disturbing, but it's also disturbing to hear about race baiting Facebook campaign that was launched by certain members of the LGBT community there. Many of the comments on the page don't identify the perpetrators as the criminals they are, but instead insinuate that it is people of color that is the problem.
I don't blog as an activist often (simply because there are many bloggers doing such a great job at it), but I feel this is an important issue. I'm saddened because this is one of my favorite cities and I've enjoyed hanging out in Boystown on numerous occasions. As a person of color I'd hate to think that I'm not welcome in a neighborhood that is SUPPOSED to be about celebrating diversity.
A friend of mine who lives in Chicago (and wishes to remain anonymous) sent me an email with even more concerning news on this situation. It is possible that the "there goes the neighborhood" tone of this Facebook campaign may impede the funding of an organization that delivers much needed services to LGBT youth. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about safe neighborhoods (lawd knows that's what I want for myself). But when we allow this type of dialogue to go in the direction of race baiting, especially as LGBT individuals, then we might as well stop pretending that we're a culture of acceptance.
A must read message from my anonymous Chicago friend after the jump.
