December Pictorial: Doran

At first, I was somewhat intimidated upon meeting Doran. At 6’3” tall, muscular build, beautiful mocha skin, and intense eyes, he certainly is a striking man with a commanding presence. He lives in  Delaware and was put in touch with me in a very interesting manner. A friend of mine is an e-mail pen pal of Doran’s and sent him a link to my website.  Well, I guess he liked what he saw because he chose to stop by the MasculineCurves studio while visiting family in the Cleveland area.

He may seem a bit intimidating at first glance, but I can truly say that Doran is probably one of the nicest, most sensitive men I’ve ever photographed. In the short time I had him in the studio I discovered a personality full of depth and a certain sincerity that is a rare find these days.

Any photographer hopes to take a little credit when he’s been the first to photograph a model that's gone on to make a name in the industry. However, in Tony's case, credit can only be attributed to shear ambition and that incredible face. Tony first appeared on this site in February, which incidentally was his first ever photo shoot. At that time he told me that he didn’t see himself as the "model" type. Well, since then, he’s appeared in a national print campaign for a leading men's fragrance brand.

This 22-year old recently graduated from Strayer University in the D.C. Metro area and has returned to Cleveland to focuson building his career as a ballroom dancer. This shoot presented me with an unusual challenge because light absolutely adores his face. We captured over 460 frames and I found it extremely difficult to edit those down to what you see here simply because there wasn’t a bad shot in the whole bunch.

Pictorial of The Month: Stephen

Last week I posted this sneak peek of the MasculineCurves October Pictorial and asked, “Who does this sexy torso belong to?” Well, as promised, it’s October 1^st and time to reveal the man behind this month’s gallery. It’s none other than one of my favorite models, Stephen.

I’ve shot Stephen a total of four times over the past couple of years, and needless to say it’s always a pleasure having him in front of my camera. In this session we accomplished some of his most abstract physique shots thus far. I think this is because we’ve developed an incredible rapport and Stephen has grown comfortable knowing that he can trust me with his image. In fact, he was so relaxed that he drifted off to la-la land when we paused for a short break...aawww...

Pictorial of The Month

Born and raised on Cleveland's east  side, Jason is surely on his way to becoming a real-life success story. On a leap of faith, this 22-year-old headed off to NYC with dreams of making it in musical theatre. After just two months of waiting tables and living out of tiny sublets in the Big Apple, he landed a year-long gig in the touring production of The Wedding Singer. I was fortunate to get to catch up with him when he came home for a quick visit before embarking on the tour. If the show comes to a town near you, be sure to check out the real thing up close and personal.

Pictorial of The Month: August

Shawn is one of the greatest mysteries to ever step in front of my lens. The last time he posed for me was back in 2004 when I got my first camera. As a matter of fact, he is the inspiration for MasculineCurves. I titled one of those images “Real Men Have Curves Too” as he was a bit thicker back then.

Over the next three years I would hear from Shawn from time to time, but never had the opportunity to get him back in front of the camera. In July of this year, he called me up out of the blue one day, and asked if he could stop by for another shoot. Not wanting to pass on this rare opportunity I dropped everything and said “sure.”

There was a lot of intensity in his aura when he arrived at the studio, which worked well in front of the camera. However, I got the sense that he wasn’t able to stay focused in the moment. “I’ve just got a lot on my mind,” he explained. Just forty minutes into the shoot he jumped up, threw on his clothes, and walked right out the door.

I can spend up to three of four hours photographing men who read like open books. It only takes a few moments with an enigma to paint a vivid portrait.

Pictorial of The Month

While each of my models is required to sign a release granting me permission to use his image, I forgot to ask this month’s discovery if it was okay to refer to him by his first name on this website. So I’ll just refer to him as “L”.

When L initially made contact with me by sending me a few self-pics via email, I was excited to meet with him and get a photo shoot scheduled.  Obviously he takes good care of himself, and I felt his physique set a positive example of the male body image; attainable and aesthetic.  For me, he is the type of man that defines my photographic work.
