Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car came out in the summer of 1988. I was about to turn 13 and the very first time I heard Chapman strumming its blues-ish acoustic riff over the airwaves my world became a bit more enlightened on the power of the human spirit. “
You got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere.
For me, Fast Car was about striving for positive change in one’s life. Overcoming adversity is one thing, but making a conscious decision to do so in the face of predictable circumstances is the transformation the character in Chapman’s song goes through. At a tender age I was inspired by this person’s hope and the fact that she knows she has nothing to lose by making change happen.
You got a fast car. Is it fast enough so you can fly away? We gotta make a decision. Leave tonight, or live and die this way.
For many people, those words couldn’t be spoken with more truth. The song ends in a cliffhanger. We never know if this person gets in that fast car, but I’d like to think she did. In my opinion these are some of the best lyrics ever produced in the pop music genre and if I had to create a soundtrack to life it would most definitely include Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car.
